Today I’m talking about an often overlooked and somewhat taboo part of self development – shadow work. Often associated with magickal people, it’s the key for anyone on the path to a more developed self awareness. No matter how you define it, we all aim to live an abundant life. Shadow work might just be the secret to creating the life you desire. Alright, let’s get co-creating!
As I took the dive (head first) into embracing my true calling, my passions, my abundance – I cordially introduced myself to my shadow. It’s not that cute, lanky, black silhouette that follows me around all day. It’s the other me that dwells inside. It’s the unconscious me. Now, I know we’re all aware that there are darker parts of our being that we aren’t all too keen on, but have you ever considered that you might as well embrace those parts of you, too? I’d like to lovingly suggest that you add this to your bag of tricks. Knowing and loving your shadow is the missing piece.
Alright, it’s autumn!! Like many Midwestern women, it is my favorite time of year.
Bring on the layers, bring on the cider, bring on the smell of leaves, bring on the creepy stories. This time of harvest is a perfect time to not only fly your freak flag proudly, but also to tune into what makes you feel good and warm.
Lately, what’s keeping me warm and holding my focus is nurturing my power. The key and the result are the same; let it go.
“Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light.” – Brené Brown, The Gifts of Imperfection
Let the bullshit that doesn’t serve your goal go. Let the haters go. The cloud of laziness, the fear of failure and/or missing out, the insecurity; let ’em go. I’ve found, and I’ve said it before, that with this mindset, even the jerks that cross my path and test my capacity to ‘let it go’ can’t shake my strong hold on this. This is the key to my successes, big or small. Babylove, it’s the key to your success, too.
Summer is in full swing and I am back with a treat for your ears. I encourage a dance move or two…or three!!
It has truly been a whirlwind season. As August begins, I am compelled to curate a perfect summer night’s playlist, but also sitting here wondering how it got to be August so quickly! This playlist is perfectly suited for a backyard canopied in white lights, citronella candles, cozy old blankets cast over chairs and singing insects.
Whether you’ll be taking in the night sky, hosting a backyard shindig or simply cooking with all the windows open (my favorite thing to do) this evening, turn up the volume and enjoy this second dreamy mix!!
As always, here are the two links to enjoy the Essentials (Vol. II) as you read the tidbits I’ve included to set the mood:
Hello, friends – new and old. I have got to tell you something!
I don’t believe in coincidence anymore.
I walk around wearing a 50 year old dress and a sleeve of sailor tattoos like it’s no big deal, but I’m afraid to talk about magickal moments?
The other morning, fate walked up and said hello to me. I mean to say, it was louder than ever – like, “HEY! Hey you. ELYN! Look and listen already, damn it!” I’ve always believed certain things were meant to be, I’ve seen the ‘signs’ as they were presented (whether I chose to listen or not), I’m very spiritual but had no real ground to stand on in that area. You might even say I’m very superstitious.
Now, when I say ‘the other morning’ I don’t mean yesterday; this happened a week ago. I sat with this magickal occurrence for an entire week!! I’ve decided, like I said already, it’s time to come out with it.
I want to talk to you about this amazingly simple thing, that has completely changed my life – Positive thinking.
I know, I know. This sounds so cliche! But I’m as serious as a heart attack, as they say. Stick with me.
I’ve been working on myself for the past couple of years. Of course, I wish I could tell you I’ve always had this tool in my back pocket, but I didn’t. I just didn’t get the whole, “happiness is a choice,” thing. So, of course, positive thinking seemed totally silly to me, too.
Today I’m sharing a super simple craft with you, blending my two favorite things – nostalgia, which is the thread that ties my style (my life, if we’re being real) together, and the refrigerator…because, ummm, food?!
As I start this journey of sharing my know how with you, my journal is becoming my main lifeline.
I’ve always had a few notebooks around the house, but I really only used them when I needed to make a grocery list or work out some tough emotions. Lately, I’ve been carrying around this beautiful black leather bound book in my bag and I cannot stress enough just how much it’s improved my creative process!
Every time we’re on the internet – which let’s be honest, is probably too often – we find things we “like” or “pin” and that’s more often than not a fleeting thought. A plethora of references that could really improve our creative process are just lost to a click.
Spring is here, summer is near and we’re all celebrating in Detroit!
As a first of many, I’ve curated a 10 song playlist for you lovely people to enjoy. This one is for getting in touch with your feminine side – in the yard, with your favorite beverage, on a sunshiny morning.
Sometime ago, this young woman named Elyn E. (that’s me!), had a stretch sharing tunes on the best damn radio station there ever was – WIDR, 89.1, Kalamazoo. This first of many ‘Essential’ lists of tunes is an ode to what she made out of the long running program Grrlville. She learned a lot, she loved a lot, she shared tunes that hit home, every chance she got.
Without further adieu, here’s the link (to whichever platform you prefer) so you can listen as you scroll:
Hello, my vintage lovers! With years of collecting vintage clothing, I’ve found a few ways to care for delicate garments.
I no longer put the fate of my treasures in the hands of a dry cleaning attendant. In part, out of my pocketbook’s occasional limit, but mostly because I’m a bit of a control freak.
A must have for hand washing is a good size wash basin like this one from Sterlite. A hanging rack will come in handy, too! I love, love, love this one from Greenco, because I can hang it right on the door in our laundry “room” and keep my items flat to dry.
Here is a comprehensive guide to get you started:
Okay, let’s be honest, we’ve all shrunken a wool garment from time to time. It happens! While it may be funny for a moment to behold a miniature sweater fit for a doll, let’s not let this tragedy happen to your beautiful thrift find. Wool is pretty resilient, in fact. Think of the weather it’s made to endure while keeping it’s sheep warm and dry! So don’t be scared off or put your wool wears on the shelf waiting to be worn until you can take it to the cleaners. Here’s how I wash my favorite wool pieces…
