Positive Thinking – 3 Simple Steps

Hello, my people!

I want to talk to you about this amazingly simple thing, that has completely changed my life – Positive thinking.

I know, I know. This sounds so cliche! But I’m as serious as a heart attack, as they say. Stick with me.

I’ve been working on myself for the past couple of years. Of course, I wish I could tell you I’ve always had this tool in my back pocket, but I didn’t. I just didn’t get the whole, “happiness is a choice,” thing. So, of course, positive thinking seemed totally silly to me, too.

Halle-freakin’-lujah. I get it now!

Happiness may not always come easy. There are most definitely trying moments, days, years *ahem, 2016*.

With some really hard work, radical shifts in thinking and committing to practice on the daily, positive thinking becomes so simple. You, my person – you deserve it!!

 

Once you start giving yourself time to get clear on the things you need to be happy – a door opens. That, my friend, is when this great tool I call positive thinking walks in.

 

The hard work: Listening to the good stuff and embracing positive thinking.

Realizing that everyone telling you it’s a choice is actually so right on. I heard it all the time – all over the internet, all over the television, in conversation – it was there. Not always in so many words, but it was there. The critic in my head, determined to hold me back from everything I needed, didn’t want me to hear it!

One day something clicked. I wish I could remember exactly what did it, but I realized, in the time it takes to blink, that happiness really is a choice. The jerk in my head was wrong! Imagine that. Something so easy as turning off the T.V. It clicked and I listened. I chose to listen…to turn off the inner critic and just listen to the good stuff around me.

For me, this was the hardest part. I’ve seen some shit, I’ve been let down, but I learned from that. Once I realized learning was the easy part, it all became so clear.

Learning from the hard times, the things that don’t serve you well, comes naturally. After that, it is a choice to work hard at listening to the universe. I’ve been working hard on the things that lead to happiness. It’s so damn worth it!

Radical shifts: Stepping out of my innate cynicism and into positive thinking.

I questioned everything. I guess I still do, but now it’s more a question of, “how does this enrich my life?” I look at things logically, but I leave room for a supernal truth…sounds heavy right? I’m just talking about the “light” that’s there if you’re willing to look and listen.

– An example –

  • Logical/Cynical: The sunset is beautiful, but I should really be inside doing the dishes and then getting ready for work tomorrow. There will be another sunset.
  • Logical/Supernal Truth: The sunset is beautiful. The siding on my house is even beautiful right now in it’s pink glow. This is life, this is now and everything else can wait a damn minute while I choose to be happy and to breath.

It’s a simple moment, a simple idea, a simple diversion for happiness. It’s so important to take those 15 minute moments here and there, because you know what? They add up! They brought me here, literally – to you. That makes me happy and you best believe it was my choice.

Committing to practice positive thinking: Taking time, every damn day, to sit down and practice.

Living positively doesn’t happen over night. There is so much working against us. I’m not saying it’s easy to ignore the negative or that you should – the world needs us to pay attention now more than ever.

I’m saying it’s easy, and that you must take time, to practice.

With practice it becomes so simple to accept the negative, but then listen to and choose the positive!

Yes, I know we’re all very busy and who’s got time to spare for this, right? Listen, there’s so much muck in our brain’s some days. The only thing that’ll really clean it up, so you can continue to see the light side, is writing it down.

Writing down affirmations, outlining your plan to overcome negativity, pulling the positive forward. Write about things you love. Talk about things that make you so freakin’ happy! Getting clear on what happiness looks like to you is simple if you’re willing to give yourself a few minutes to focus on this everyday. Once you start giving yourself time to get clear on the things you need to be happy – a door opens. That, my friend, is when this great tool I call positive thinking walks in. I take an hour every morning to do this. Sometimes I take an hour at night, too.

It doesn’t have to be words all the time either – sitting and thinking while you watch the sun cast beautiful colors on the earth around you is practice, too. Saying your affirmations to yourself throughout the day is practice.
